Our vacation home is located on a small man-made pond, and I get asked all the time: “Can I swim in the pond? Is the pond safe to swim in?”
The answer is yes and yes… BUT… the pond is small and although it will do in a pinch, it is spring-fed and cold!
There are many better places to swim!
Here are some fun spots in the White Mountains:
Diana’s Baths

Located on the Bartlett/Conway border, Diana’s Baths offers the perfect blend of swimming and relatively easy hiking experiences. The main attraction, a series of cascading waterfalls, creates inviting natural pools, where visitors can cool off and swim during summer.
The surrounding hiking trails through the White Mountain National Forest provide an excellent opportunity for adventure and exploration. Families and hikers can embark on scenic journeys and are rewarded with the enchanting sights and sounds of Diana’s gorgeous waterfalls.
Water shoes are advised. Porta-potties are available. Get there early as the small paid parking lot fills up quickly! Do not be tempted to park along the road. The fine is $100 and they tow!
Echo Lake

Echo Lake in Conway is a fantastic family swimming spot for several reasons. First and foremost, its crystal-clear, pristine waters offer a safe and refreshing environment for swimmers of all ages. The lake’s sandy beach is perfect for children to play and build sandcastles, ensuring hours of wholesome fun. The surrounding White Mountain scenery – including a backdrop of Cathedral Ledge – enhances the overall experience.
Additionally, the lake’s relatively shallow depth and lifeguard presence during peak seasons add an extra layer of security, giving parents peace of mind while their little ones enjoy the water. You can also take an easy walk around the lake, should you crave some exercise (or a break from your family – ha!)
Floatation devices are allowed and there are bathroom and changing room facilities. There is a small snack bar with basics like ice cream treats, drinks, and sunscreen. During prime season, they also sell floats!
It’s best to book Echo Lake parking in advance online.
First Bridge
First Bridge in North Conway is an exceptional river swimming spot due to its pristine natural beauty and idyllic surroundings. Nestled in the heart of a picturesque farmland landscape, the bridge spans across the Saco River, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its refreshing waters on warm summer days. Generally speaking and in normal weather conditions, the water currents are gentle, making it safe for swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
There are porta-potties but no additional facilities, although this location is a couple of minutes from North Conway village. There is a $20 parking fee to access the area for non-residents.
Lower Falls
Lower Falls along the Kancamagus Highway, is a truly enchanting destination that boasts the perfect setting for both swimming and picnicking, making it an excellent spot for families and nature enthusiasts. The falls, with their gentle cascades and crystal-clear pools, create an inviting atmosphere for swimmers to enjoy a refreshing dip in the cool mountain waters.
The natural pools provide safe and delightful swimming experiences, especially for children. Additionally, the surrounding lush greenery offers numerous shaded spots that are perfect for picnics and relaxation. Families can enjoy a picnic amidst the tranquil sounds of flowing water and the breathtaking backdrop of the White Mountains. The combination of swimming, picnicking, and relaxing at Lower Falls makes it an irresistible destination for those seeking a day of outdoor fun and tranquility.
Bathroom facilities are available at Lower Falls and there is a paid parking lot. You can also park along the Kanc.
Thorne Pond / Saco River area
Thorne Pond in Bartlett is an idyllic and picturesque spot that is super close to our vacation home. It makes for a perfect family picnic, fishing, easy hiking, and river spot. Nestled amidst the scenic beauty of nature, this charming location offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for relaxation and bonding with loved ones.
The pond’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for casual fishing, and the nearby river offers refreshing swims and wading, ensuring endless fun for kids and adults alike. There are also several easy walking paths, making this great for year-round outdoor enjoyment.
It is also one of my favorite spots for finding beautiful smooth river rocks!
There is a small parking area at the entrance, but no bathroom facilities.
